(Tune In!) Special 12/17 “Our Region’s Business” Showcases Pittsburgh’s Life Sciences Hub: the South Side

Pittsburgh’s South Side: more than its industrial past and nightlife reputation.  This historic neighborhood is a life sciences hotbed!

On either side of Carson St., the main drag of Pittsburgh’s South Side – and on plenty of streets to Carson’s right and left – no fewer than 21 life sciences companies have set up shop.  Just a couple of miles from “research central” in the region, the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh and its university community, life sciences companies and organizations – both new and seasoned – are growing.  They are creating jobs, powering the regional economy and advancing life sciences innovations, from medical devices and products to medical technology to help Pittsburghers and people around the world live healthier lives.

Meet a sampling of them this Sunday, Dec. 17, on a special “Our Region’s Business” show focused on life sciences in Pittsburgh and companies operating on the city’s South Side or with ties to it, including several that had their beginnings with the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse (PLSG), the region’s long standing regional economic development organization devoted exclusively to growing life sciences companies. PLSG celebrated a 15-year anniversary this fall, as did the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, another South Side anchor for the region’s exciting life sciences sector.  McGowan marked its silver anniversary this November and is considered one of the most diverse centers of regenerative medicine research in the world.

“Our Region’s Business” airs at 11 a.m. on WPXI, our NBC affiliate, and this episode is a remote taped at ALung on the South Side – one of the region’s long-standing life sciences ventures.  ALung is now progressing with clinical trials in the U.S. for its pioneering Hemolung,® a respiratory assist device that’s innovated and manufactured right here in Pittsburgh.  Other life sciences and companies featured on the show include Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, McGowan Institute, Carmell Therapeutics and Rinovum Women’s Health.

Tune in on Sunday for this special look inside our region’s life sciences sector.  Hosted by veteran broadcast journalist Bill Flanagan, “Our Region’s Business” is the weekly business affairs show of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, of which the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance is an affiliate.
