(Watch) More Transatlantic Air Service is Taking Off in the Pittsburgh Region

by on July 12, 2017

Within one week in June, two new nonstop transatlantic flights were launched from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), further enhancing southwestern Pennsylvania’s connectivity to Europe.

Condor, a Germany-based airline, started seasonal nonstop service to Frankfurt – the first connection to the German market from Pittsburgh since 2014. This is an excellent addition, but two new nonstop flights to Europe – in addition to the Delta/Air France flight launched in 2009 – are better than one. Iceland-based WOW air now also provides nonstop service from PIT to Reykjavik, Iceland with easy connections to an additional 21 European cities including London, Dublin, Paris and Berlin.

These flights from PIT will add to the convenience of getting to Europe for not only leisure travel, but business travel, as well — case in point: the nonstop Condor service to Germany. One of the largest foreign investors in the Pittsburgh region, Germany has more than 75 companies operating 180 establishments and employing over 10,000 in the region, which creates plentiful opportunities for business-related travel between Germany and the region.

In recent years, the region has benefited from PIT — one of southwestern Pennsylvania’s most significant transportation assets and it’s nearly doubling of nonstop flights, increasing passenger traffic and adding new international service. “We’re pleased to see positive trends at Pittsburgh International Airport [such as] as new flights are embraced by our thriving region,” said Christina Cassotis, CEO, Pittsburgh International Airport. “The community is taking note of recent airport improvements, and airlines and airport stakeholders on a national level are responding. We know there’s more work to do, but we feel we have turned a corner.”
