Ireland and UK Bound: the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance

by on September 13, 2013

The PittsbuPRAtoEuropeBlogrgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (PRA) will soon be hopping a plane, crossing The Pond and painting the towns of Dublin, Manchester and London black and gold.  The Sept. 29 NFL International Series game at London’s Wembley Stadium – where the Steelers will play for the first time and against the Minnesota Vikings – provides an exciting opportunity for the PRA to leverage a globally recognized, pro-sports brand to advance the ball for the region, so to speak, on the international business investment field.

At the beginning of the week of the big (and sold out!) game at Wembley, regional marketing gets underway in Dublin.  In addition to a life sciences and medical devices seminar in cooperation with UPMC Beacon Hospital in Dublin, there will be a special “Pittsburgh Gathering” at Google Ireland – the headquarters for all of Google’s operations in Europe.  As Ireland welcomes members of the Irish Diaspora back to its shores this years as part of “The Gathering” – a national initiative – representatives of the Pittsburgh region’s business community will recognize Ireland-Pittsburgh ties at the Sept. 23 “Pittsburgh Gathering.”  A by-invitation-only event, the “Pittsburgh Gathering” provides an opportunity to network, commemorate existing ties between the two nations and foster new ones – all amid the European operations hub of one of Earth’s most recognized tech brands.

Highlighting manufacturing – and its convergence with the global energy supply chain – the Pittsburgh team will travel to Manchester, UK for a seminar on business opportunities resulting from new energy markets.  Presented in partnership with the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, UK Trade & Investment and British American Business Council NW, the event will be held on the morning of Sept. 25.  That evening, the same partners will join forces with the PRA and for a “Pittsburgh – Manchester Reception” at the Manchester Art Gallery.  Pittsburgh region business leaders and professionals from Pittsburgh-based businesses in Manchester and the north of England, as well as alumni from Pittsburgh universities who are now in the UK and Greater Manchester business leaders will be in attendance.

Right before the big game, the PRA will be building buzz for the Pittsburgh region with a “Celebrate Pittsburgh” reception at the Primrose Street offices of Reed Smith, with their sweeping views of London.  Headquartered in downtown Pittsburgh, Reed Smith is one of the world’s two largest law firms.  The Sept. 26 evening event will acquaint guests with the rich vein of international investment and business partnership opportunities that Pittsburgh has to offer, as well as the region’s live-work-play assets showcased on Business leaders from both shores, as well as alumni from Pittsburgh’s universities, now living in the UK, will mix and mingle.

On game day, Sunday, Sept. 29, the PRA and will host a Steelers Nation Celebration at a pop-up Steelers Bar at London’s Sportsbar & Grille, 19-25 Cowcross Street, Farringdon.  Alumni of Pittsburgh region universities are invited to watch the game, celebrate Pittsburgh-area ties and find out more about the opportunities in Pittsburgh to “advance a career and build a life you’ll love.”  There will be food, spirits and Pittsburgh prizes.

Executives from the Pittsburgh region companies who will be in Ireland or the UK this September, are invited participate in any of the seminars or receptions, as are business leaders from Dublin, Manchester or London who would like to learn more about doing business in the region.  The “Pittsburgh Gathering” at Google Ireland is by-invitation-only, so please contact Savannah Smith at the PRA to request an invitation, as well as to RSVP for any of the other events.
