A Week to Recognize, Celebrate Life Sciences in Pittsburgh

by on April 16, 2018

Today kick-offs Life Sciences Week 2018 in Pittsburgh – a week-long series of events designed to draw attention to one of southwestern Pennsylvania’s key sectors that’s a real lifesaver.

Usually paired with healthcare when we talk about our regional economy (since the two are complementary, yet unique), life sciences puts Pittsburgh on the global stage with the advances that this sector is pioneering in terms of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and med-tech innovations, regardless of whether this good work is happening in the laboratory, clinical setting or advanced manufacturing facility.

Given southwestern Pennsylvania’s rich history in medicine (think back to Jonas Salk and the polio vaccine developed here in 1952, plus the University of Pittsburgh’s leadership in medicine and biotechnology) alongside its capacity for engineering and making things, it’s really no wonder that life sciences has found a home in the region and continues to grow here.

In fact, in 2017, life sciences and healthcare was the leading sector – among the five key sectors that fuel our economy – for total job creation – that is, both new and retained jobs. It’s also a sector that last year saw some $3 billion in investment in healthcare infrastructure.

For established and new-comer companies in this sector, the region has proved itself to be fertile ground for ventures focused on advances and solutions that allow people worldwide to lead healthier lives and live longer.

During this week, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance will activate a robust social media campaign to spotlight individuals, ventures and organizations (including the critically important Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse) that are a part of a sector that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, in spite of the life-changing work that happens under its banner. Keep your eye on our social media channels (Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn) and like and share our posts to help amplify these important messages.

If you’d like a look at some of the key players in this sector, you can watch a special “Our Region’s Business” program from last December that’s devoted entirely to life sciences in our region. Go behind the scenes at ALung on South Side, and meet some half dozen individuals who – from Pittsburgh’s historic South Side – are innovating in the life sciences space. Interviewees include representatives from the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, Carmell Therapeutics and Rinovum Women’s Health, in addition to ALung.

And mark your calendar to watch the Sunday, April 22 broadcast of “Our Region’s Business” which will feature a segment on LifeX, a new(er) life sciences accelerator in Pittsburgh, and one of its portfolio companies, Peptilogics. LifeX and its companies are focused on finding solutions for some of the world’s most challenging healthcare issues. This segment will also be added to the “Our Region’s Business” archives for viewing at your convenience.

Happy Life Sciences Week and cheers to all of the 150 regional companies that comprise this sector! We are all better, quite literally, because of your presence here.
